Weekly Updates

Candidates March and Listen

Welcome to one of our weekly posts, Independent Action, where we let you know the important moves Independent candidates and organizations made over the past week. #MarchForOurLives was huge this past week, so much of our discussion will surround the candidates that involved themselves in the marches.

Neal Simon, an Independent candidate in Maryland for U.S. Senate, joined many in their efforts to prevent school shootings through the #WalkForOurLives protest. Simon sent a message via Facebook, “Like many Marylanders, they are frustrated with the two parties’ failure to get anything done on reducing gun violence and many other issues. They agree: in order for change to happen, we need elected officials who will put people over politics!” Like many others, Simon is calling for #CountryOverParty, a phrase we are starting to hear echo around the nation.

Noah Dyer, an Independent gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, spent the #WalkForOurLives protest doing something a little different than other Independent candidates. He provided his message around guns that he described as “largely pro 2nd Amendment”, but claimed the message was received well by the crowd. Dyer continues to show his ability to work with both sides, as just last week he spent some time listening to Bernie Sanders speak in Phoenix.

Ones to Watch For:

Nick Thomas, an Independent candidate for Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District.

Paul Hamlin, an Independent candidate for US House of Representatives in New Jersey 1st District. Hamlin released a video about the spending bill that recently passed. Make sure to check out his Facebook page for more information.

Lee McQueen, an AR-04 House Independent candidate, was officially placed on the ballot this week. However, McQueen must gain 2,000 more signatures by May 1 to stay on the ballot.
